Southern Eagle

There've been a few threads about HMS Ark Royal being retained and seeing service in the Falklands War but what if her sister ship HMS Eagle went instead?

First off the Eagle would need to be kept in service after 1972, however several sources state she was in better condition than Ark Royal, so it's fairly easy for Eagle to receive the refit Ark Royal got and operate Phantoms.

So what would the composition of the Falklands Task Force look like in this ATL and how would the war procede.

In my mind this would be more likely to happen, assuming the political decision to keep the Eagle in service rather than rebuild the Ark occured. The Eagle had already been rebuilt in 1961-64 and just needed updates from this time on, so would have taken the Phantom with no worries and considerably less cost. As has been mentioned she was in better nick than the Ark which could be canabalised to keep her going, the reverse of OTL.

As for the results, they'd be the same as those for Ark Royal in the Falklands, an arsekinking for the Argies.

Much anecdotal evidence points to this being a major fear for the Argentinians. Even officers told their men to not surrender, less they be bummed...
