Southern China invaded by Ayuthaya

Is it possible for the Southern part of China to be invaded by Ayuthaya or any South East Asian polity and the mongols get the north.

No. No, it is not. Did you intentionally pick one of the states furthest away from China? In terms of geography and history, you may as well have asked if Spain could do it.

Ayuthaya does not have a shared land border with Ming or Qing China, skirmishes could occur if they occup the Shan states / Lan Xang (modern day Laos). But I cannot see them launching an invasion.

Burma - maybe - perhaps in response to the attack by the Ming Empire in the 17th century. But they would, I think only, advance as far as Yunnan, if they were inclined. However in doing so they would open up their flanks to the Siamese and for the Ming to concentrate their military might against them (pretty ugly). So in summation no for both.

South East Asian polity?

Northern Vietnam was an integral part of China for over 1000 years - from about 110 BC to 930 AD. Yes, they rebelled occasionally, but so did various provinces of China. They were never independent for long.

Champa, however, was outside the borders of China.

Vietnam was the one of Ten Kingdoms of Wudai period that never was reunited with Song Empire.

Could you have Vietnam taken over, not by rebellion of locals inside China as per OTL, but by invasion of Champa outside China?

I thought that Champa also had detached from China, earlier than Dai Viet.

History is not a game of RISK. Or EU3 or Victoria or whatever else you may try and draw inspiration from. States do not wage war to make pretty shapes on a map. They do not conquer because that one province will totally give them a land border with China. They do not conquer for the sole purpose of conquering.

History does not work that way. You have to take into account all sorts of factors that you are simply ignoring in favor of playing RISK. Go to the Shared Worlds Forum for stuff like this.

Thank you kindly, this needs to be said more often. :D Even long time members often treat war and conquest in such a trivial way as well.

I should point out that Xynrax's excellent timeline, Empire of the South: Tales of Glorious Ayutthaya, is based around the concept of a resurgent Ayutthaya, which eventually has the ability to interfere in Chinese internal affairs. Not invade China, of course, but influence them and have a superior trade policy. This was implied at the end of the last update by Xynrax, and will be described in detail in the next (I'm assuming).
