South American Union

What if nations in South America produced a political union similar to the European Union? Is it feasible? What are the effects?

The UNASUR is currently working into that.

For most of the early 20th century nationalist governments were against that, and during the Cold War the US constantly intervened in South America. There was the Plan Condor, but... that was not exactly an union, nor does it benefit the continent. Some other plans, like Perón's ATLAS, are interesting, altought unlikely.

Your best bet is to weaken US influence in South America. One idea I've thought of is a 'sucessful' Bay of Pigs: such an event would have rippled across Latin America, making it more skeptical of US policies.

South American history during the Cold War is complex; don't be fooled by the 'Nothing Ever Happens In South America' trope. The concept of the Patria Grande has deep roots in Latin American thinking, and opportunist movements or persons could work sucessfully for it.

(inb& people say 'but South Americans HATE each other, it's not possible!')
