South Africa neutral during world war 2

Could South Africa remain neutral during world war 2

Would this require the National Party to not split apart in the 1930s

How would this impact World war 2

Would this lead to an earlier South African Republic or Apartheid

Would South Africa become a destination for the Ratlines

Neutrality during WW2 could help avert aparthiet during the Cold War.
So many men - from English ancestry - died during the two WWs that they became a minority in South Africa.
Boers - from Dutch ancestry - gained control of SA politics during the Cold War.

As for SA becoming a rat line for escaping nazis ..... It might happen if they moved away from the coast and quietly settled on remote farms surrounded by sympathetic Boer neighbors.
Exiled nazis might settle as far north as Rhodesia.
Would nazi exiles be welcomed in Tanzania - a former Imperial German colony?

Hertzog would have to win, over Smuts. The ossawabrag, was pro German.
What role would havagana play in promoting a benign Irish style non belligerentce?

So where would the equipment sent for the East Africa Campaign be sent, India, Singapore or Australia? The 72 ex-French Mohawks sent to South Africa in mid-1941 would be useful in any of these areas.
