Soonest US President to leave American Soil?

The first US President to leave America while serving was Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, to 'inspect' the Panama Canal, then under construction. Taft, the next president, made one trip to Mexico (very brief) as well.

Can we think of any ways to have American presidents leave America any sooner?

In the days before rapid communications, I really doubt that a President would want to or be able to leave the seat of government for weeks at a time (which is what it would likely take for most foreign visits). Once you get the telegraph, it becomes a lot easier. It would be 'easy' for a US President to travel to Buffalo and make a quick trip across to Niagara Falls (well, Fort Erie, probably) to meet the Canadian Prime Minister (i.e. of the Union of Upper and Lower Canada), some time around 1855 or so.

It might be possible for a President to take a swift sailing vessel to Halifax or Bermuda to meet a British envoy (or something) rather earlier.

And here I was just thinking of a loss in the Civil War, and a president going to Richmond (now foreign soil) to sign the peace treaty in person.

Travelling to foreign country lasted on 19th century weeks so it not be very plausible him leaving US soil Only way might be that CSA wins the civil war and then president visits in Richmond or whatever is capital of CSA. But even victory of South is implausible.

When you say, "leave American Soil" do you mean leaving the North American Continent (taking away Canada and Mexico) or do you mean, leaving land owned by the United States of America.

If its the later what about France keeping the Louisiana Territory and having Napoleon meet with Jefferson in 1805 :)

Didn´t Lincoln plan a pilgrimage to Jerusalem while in office ?

The easiest one has already been stated, and that's Madison being captured by the British.

Bonus points for that one: Clay could potentially technically be the next in line for the presidency if Madison's VP dies a little ahead of schedule... and he's away in Ghent for the negotiations! So that's two presidents in one go!
