So while thinking about the upcoming inevitable reveal of Smash info at E3, I began to wonder...what if Sony, and not Nintendo, had created the Smash Bros. franchise? The PSX already had its fair share of good fighting games, but I don't remember any that felt as "accessible" or "sit down and just have fun with friends" as Smash (usually :)) does.

Would Smash become the phenomenon it is today OTL? And would Sony have enough pull to start pulling in third-party characters to supplement their first-party crew?
Because at the moment the only characters I can think of are from Capcom and Squeenix...

Yeah, I remembered that game as soon as I posted. Apparently it sold 1 million copies (not bad).
I was more interested in if such a game came out in Smash's place/in the same timeframe. Would it still become a phenomenon?
I guess it depends on the character roster. I would assume it would keep the Smash Bros. mechanics.

I'm not sure it would be: Sony dosen't have as many notable first-party IP's to fill out the roster of a mascot battle royal in 1999, considering they've only really been in the bussiness for 3.5 years at this point. They just don't have the established brand/reputation that Nintendo's icons did to establish itself above and beyond the other fighting games that would be available on their consoles. Indeed, the fact that the PS 1 had so many other good fighting games, especially compared to the N64, would be to the detriment of such a game: players are far more likely to decide to favor the pre-existing franchises instead, limiting the adoption and sales.

They had a game like Smash called All Stars

Maybe borrow from that pool?

Anyone remember this?

Also, what if Microsoft did a smash type game?
