Songs to Read a TL By?

AH Sountrack: Songs to Read a TL By?

I frankly have no idea where to put this thread, but I like the idea so here goes:

As I've gone about brainstorming TL's and my Opus project (the one with the Irish-American guy who avoids an angry Communist), I've been listening to my iPod, and the ideas have kinda blended into one thought which is that certain songs go really well with some of those ideas, or heighten the atmosphere while thinking of them. So, like a TL sountrack if you will.

So what are some songs/ a good soundtrack to read your own timelines or other alternate histories while listening to? Songs that exemplify the environment or heighten it or go well with it?

In your case, would Black 47's "James Connolly" be a good one?
There's a bit of irony which just smacked me in the face while I was reading that post. Black 47's lead singer is Larry Kirwan. Larry Kirwan is the author of the book "Liverpool Fantasy", which my current profile pic is taken from and which I have been lately thinking of using as the basis for a TL at some point (Beatles breaking up in 1962 just before they hit big, and Paul becoming a burned out Vegas singer).

Rage Against the Machine or the Dead Kennedys goes very well with Reds! :)

Though, to tell you what type of music I've been listening too when writing it, more than a few Symphony X references have found their way into WWII foreshadowing updates.

Actually though, I find I listen to music in the background a lot less than I used to. Anymore, I usually end up listening to music when I'm driving or on a walk/run. So I can't give much more of a suggestion. Other than Pink Floyd, because Pink Floyd goes well with everything.

depends on whats going on, when normal stuff goes on i usually have whatever music piques my interest at the time.

when stuff gets epic i fire up the ominous latin chanting

Anything about post-WWI warfare is best accompanied by something like Rammstein's Links 234.

And of course, for any storyline where a country defends its homeland against a powerful foe, The Prodigy's Invaders Must Die.

Also, Muse's Butterflies & Hurricanes. It's a great song, plus the title's more than appropriate for alternate history.

change everything you are, and everything you were...

In the thread for Protect and Survive: A timeline there was a discussion to this effect. My choice for that TL was Our Town by Iris DeMent.

Yeah - it's a decent song too. When I'm writing Protect and Survive, occasionally it'll shuffle onto a song that musically or lyrically fits the mood, so I guess the same will apply for reading:

Pretty Girls Make Graves - The Smiths

Give in to lust, give up to lust/ Oh, heaven knows we'll soon be dust.

The New Stone Age - Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark

Oh, my god what have we done this time/ In the new stone age.

No Sound But The Wind - Editors

We can never go home son, we no longer have one/ We walk through the ash, and the charred remains of our country.

(N.B - this song was actually written about 'The Road', but the nuclear-war specific lyrics above were changed when the song was rerecorded for, ahem, the Twilight Soundtrack)

Elegia - New Order

[Sparse, mournful instrumental; also proof that Barney and Co. could play their instruments if they wanted to]

Spanish Sahara - Foals

Forget the horror here, leave the horror here/ It's future rust and it's future dust.

Disorder - Joy Division

Lights are flashing, cars are crashing, it's getting frequent now

Realistically there's more, but thats what I've got off the top of my head.

I have a TL in the works that needs some music (The only songs I've definitely selected are Indigo Girls and Selena Gomez- and to tell why the latter's in there would spoil the big surprise).
Any TL involving Nazis and Jets requires Blue Oyster Cult's "ME 262"
I recommended a few songs for the "Protect and Survive" TL, including Kraftwerk's "Radioactivity" and Indigo Girls' "Point Hope FOIA" (BTW, did Jethro Tull's "Protect and Survive" (or the songs of the same title by anyone else) get mentioned?)
The "Red Dawn:American Revolution and Rebirth" storyline could use Uncle Tupelo's cover of the old labor song "Coalminers".
The "Lost in the Wash" story reminds me of Bruce Springsteen's cover of "Mary Don't you Weep" (from "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions").
Lastly, I posted a link to a song that could be considered AH in some versions in the "Things that look like Alternate History, but aren't" thread. The Sea Shanty "Santianna" has in the versions I've heard, Santa Ana being born near Cape Horn, beating the Americans (at Molino del Rey or Monterrey), beating the Prussians, nearly beating the British, and now mining gold near Cape Horn (after he had been dead and buried...).

For my TL: Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony, Jerusalem, the Ride of the Walkiries and the soundtracks for Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.

I also included the Pet Shop Boys' Go West as an ATL popular soviet wartime song. :D
