Pozieres marked the combat debut of the AIF on the Western Front during WWI, when bns of the 1st Australian Div went into action 23 days after the commencement of the Somme battle, and suffered heavy losses from German arty and m-g fire as well as lack of experience- which included the attacking bns leaving their Lewis guns behind and thus having no fire support against German counterattacks- and staff incompetence. Now, WI this Australian debut on the Somme had been more successful ? How much of a difference would've been made to the overall conduct of the Somme battle had the Diggers taken and held onto Pozieres ? What about the effects on the engagement at Fromelles with the 5th Div's soldiers ?
