Some ship plans for naval buffs.

Escort frigates for the CVA01, to supplement the Type 82s. No gun (fools!), Sea Dart with Asroc, Ikara or Malafon.

Ooh, cool stuff, Fell!

Very 1960s in concept: nothing but missiles! Completely useless except for hunting submarines, preferably in conjunction with the carriers, and doubtless too expensive to be built in any great numbers.

Like the original Type 22s; too expensive for essentially single-role vessels and not much better at ASW than the earlier Leanders.

I'd like to have seen a single 6" gun like that used as a twin on the Blake and Tiger helicopter conversions.

Surface warships rarely fight other surface warships these days, apart from Somali pirates. Besides the biggest threats to warships during and since WW2 have been aircraft and subs.

It's that kind of attitude that gave us a lot of trouble in the Falklands. "Rarely" is not the same thing as "never", and the difference can be victory or defeat.

I know.

But a) relying on 1960s missile technology in lieu of a medium calibre gun b)lacking any gunfire support ability, is a bit silly (in hindsight) and limits effective roles, c) Sea Dart does have a limited SSM capability - and would be bloody powerful in this role given it's kinetic energy and unspent fuel - but otherwise the ships don't have a capability to engage even a patrol boat successfully.

Fully understand that economies would dictate it's omission in its envisaged role, for this was an 'all-missile' age of wonder.
