Sofa Wars

1st January 1993: Camden Lock, North London.

Good Morning. You're watching TV-AM on Channel 4. A happy new year to you all. A new year, a new channel but still the same TVAM you all know and love.

What's this then?

What?

Channel 4 showing TV-AM

Yep.

Channel 4 never showed TV-AM. They had The Big Breakfast

Ah

Ah what

This TL looks at a feud between GMTV and a very different TV-AM

Hmm

Following the loss of their contract to GMTV in 1991. Bruce Gyngell was enraged. He saw himself as a victim of the franchise system. He was the one who had taken TVAM from the brink of bankruptcy and made it the most successful station in the world. He was the one who finally crushed the unions.

He'd done all that and what was his reward? To be thrown out on his ear.

Well he wasn't having that. He would have his revenge not just on GMTV but also on ITV.

TV-AM 2 as it became known was a very different beast to it's first incarnation. It was to be the cornerstone of Kerry Packer's European operation. Still based in "Eggcup Towers" it would be effectively be a London base for PBL. Not only would it provide Channel 9 with free lodgings it would also provide an outlet for second hand programmes from Australia such as The Adventures of Skippy and The Girl From Tomorrow. It also provided exposure for AFL in the UK.
