Well, maybe if the liberals in the LBJ-HHH mold dominated the Cold War years, a "sufficiently-progressive" Left, and if Vietnam and Korean Wars non-existent, well, what do you think? After all, both were strong anticommunist and were "Vital Center Liberals".

The idea that Cubans on their own will move toward a liberal democracy and a freer, more open society.
(especially if we can avoid galvanizing them by making a bunch of threats!
and yes, an attempted invasion is a pretty serious threat, and it adds realism to all the rest)
