Socialism without Paris Commune

Paris Commune was an inspiration to both Soviet model of government and revolutionary radical left. What would happen to socialism and marxism with its absence ? Could have something else be a source of inspiration for radical marxist ideology ?

I happened to read the Wikipedia article on the Paris Commune recently, and it mentioned that Marx and the anarchists split over whether the Commune should have assembled a more centralized, ruthless mode of operation. It seems likely to me that the rather divergent ideals of leftist government would separate into different ideologies even without a concrete revolutionary scenario, but I imagine that (if Wikipedia can be trusted on the Commune's import to the bifurcation) leftism could have fractured somewhat differently in different circumstances.

The biggest thing the Radical Left loses is an example of what happens when the Left isn't completely vicious and decisive. The big lesson was "The next time you have a chance to seize power, don't blow it. Kill all your enemies and be totally ruthless." That is basically the lesson the Bolsheviks took to heart.

Everything else in terms of the ideas of how councils would work and direct democracy will probably come about anyway. It's just intellectual speculation.
