Soccer: WI Brian Clough never got injured

In OTL, Clough suffered an effectively career ending knee injury on Boxing Day 1962, and then went on to be one of the more successful, if controversial, managers of all time. What happens if he doesn't get hurt that day? Or even if it's only a mild sprain instead of a torn ACL?

I think it could make a huge difference to English football.

He wouldn't have the same bitterness to drive him forward as a manager, however he probably would have won more England caps. Could he have played in the 66 world cup?

He certainly could have, from a footballing aspect. However, with Alf Ramsey as England manager the clash of personalities would have led to Ramsey excluding him from the squad. Ramsey was a disciplinarian and rigid in his views; even before his tragic injury Cloughie was known as a 'bit of a bighead' and was convinced of the (near) infallibility of his views about football and politics.

What if he was to be bought by Don Revie for Leeds in the early 60s and carried on his prolific goalscoring form, becoming a club legend and eventual manager of Leeds United. :D

There are three good other Clough "What-Ifs"
  1. He doesn't resign from Derby in October 1973.
  2. He takes Peter Taylor with him to Leeds in 1974.
  3. He becomes England Manager in 1977 instead of Ron Greenwood or in 1982 instead of Bobby Robson.

That would be interesting. I doubt that even as a player he would have got on well enough with Revie for him to become a legend at Leeds though.

I can't see him being manager in 1982; he was riding high with Forest then who were pretty solid in the 1st Division and the English national team were quite cack. 1977 seems a safer bet.
