So I've written out Basic Ideas for 2 Pre-1900 TLs and I'd like you to vote in which one you'd like best.

When Paris Sneezes…: During the initial stages of the Paris Commune Adolphe Thiers and the rest of the 3rd Republic Government are captured and imprisioned by the National Guard. Without an organized opposition sympithetic Communes rise up in other large cities and after a brief civil war a new republic is formed. A Nice (Compared to OTL) workers state is formed which promptly beats back a counter-revolutionary invasion by Germany (but doesn't regain any land) soon other Socialist States start popping up…

Vive Le Roi Américain: Pretty standard POD for a Monarchial America. Constitutional Convention feels the need for a King to unite the country and sets up a Constitutional Monarchy with a Prime Minister. America chooses someone who speaks English and is a European Noble. Lafayette. King Joesef I of America accepts the throne after being shocked by the request and travels to Anerica to be crowned. After putting down a revolt in stubbornly Republican Rhode Island Lafayette/Joesef sets about being King with Prime Minister Washington. When TTL French Revolution rolls around, Lafayette being in America and bit France leads to big butterflies…

So What do you Think?

Personally I'm kind of leaning for When Paris Sneezes… because Royal America is so Cliche.

I have a better idea! How good is your knowledge/interest of the ancient/medieval world? We don't have enough of those these days!

Please do Vive le Roi Américain. My inner francophile loves the possibility of King Lafayette (although you're going to need one hell of a PoD to get the US to accept a Catholic monarch. Maybe he becomes protestant in exchange for taking the crown?).

I agree, but I also see a lot of potential in the conflict of having a Catholic monarch, because it would force some of the issues that were quietly swept under the rug for a while.

Another vote for the Communes. I haven't seen a timeline that explores it in enough depth yet, and it was such in interesting period.

Point taken, most likely he either strikes a deal and becomes Protastant or a national church is formed. (1st one most likely)

Not enough exploration of the Paris Commune. How a XIX Century Socialist state would develop internally has so many interesting possibilities, especially considering that Karl Marx is still alive.
Will it become an orthodox interpretation of Marxism or will there be some Kropotkinist or Bakuninist elements?
The dynamic between these philosophical strains in a Socialist France, as well as the possibilities of the proletariat of other nations around Europe rising afterwards, will be so interesting to see.

It'd be awesome to explore bringing the Socialist stage of human development about at this vital time in the history of class struggle. Too many timelines focus only on the XX Century proletariat.

My Empire Over the Ocean: Toussaint L'Overture dies before the Haitian Revolution, and Napoleon builds an American Empire.
