smoking rate hovering at 50 percent

during 1965 the percentage of people that were regular smokers in USA reached its peak at 45 percent. What does it take for the smoking rate to hover at around 50 percent until 1990? Also what would be the butterfly effects from a higher death rate due to half the population smoking regularly?

To transpose analysis from the Australian situation, a few factors:
  • Have a generally less wealthy and educated country as a whole; The prevalence of smoking is not spread evenly in the population. People with less education, less skilled jobs or who are unemployed are more likely to smoke than people of higher socio-economic status
  • Don’t have government bodies and agencies officially recognise tobacco related health issues
  • Continue supplying tobacco products as part of the rations to the armed forces
  • No mandatory health warnings on packaging or restrictions on tobacco advertising or sponsorships
  • No public bans on smoking in public/communal spaces such as workplaces, social/retail spaces
  • No increasing tobacco taxes beyond the level of inflation
  • It’s worth noting that how regular and how much tobacco consumption will vary significantly - more irregular smokers are going to have less of an impact than the same number of regular heavier smokers.

Basically you’ll end up with an even larger scale public health crisis among as people reach their middle age onwards as the health issues begin reaching crisis point - especially as most data shows that most smokers began in their teens or early adulthood. Eventually the social pressure will reach a point that can’t be ignored and action will happen.

Interesting to note as the smoking rate dropped, obesity rate increased, from around 15% to 35%
