Smallest possible U.S.A. of today.

How small could the US be. By which I mean if you took out the purchases', Louisiana, Alaska plus no Oregon Terrirtory. Also no US Texas. Would/could the US take by land force? Plus how big a world power would the US be? Like to hear what you think.
They would still get most of Lousiana due to numerical advantages in settlers.

If the U.S. expedionary army suffered a catastrophic defeat outside of Mexico City (entirely plausible), either the Mexicans would get California, New Mexico and possibly Colorado, or they would become independent Spanish speaking nations. I would lean towards independence and this would be tolerated more by the U.S. and Mexican identity was very low in those areas.

It certainly would not be in any position to purchase Louisiana.
Maybe not purchase, but they could still "regime change" portions of it when anglophone outnumber francophones and hold popular "votes" (the kind with pre conceived outcomes).

The Americans certainly could do just that, as I stated above. However, that's not the point of this thread. The OP wishes to limit, even dwarf the size of the US as much as realistically possible.
