Sleep Now in the Fire #1
"Sometimes accidents happen in life from which we have need of a little maddness to extricate ourselves successfully" -Francois de la Rochefoucauld
June 17th, 1957 Washington D.C.
Senate Majority Leader, Lyndon Baines Johnson, died today in a tragic accident. His vehicle was struck head on by a delivery truck; the driver was reported to have swirved to avoid hitting a dog and lost control, colliding into the senator's car. He was rushed to a nearby hospital; but sadly passed on from his extensive injuries.
Senator Johnson, was born forty-eight years ago, near Stonewall Texas, on August 27th, 1908. He would go on to become a teacher after graduating from Southwest Texas State Teachers College; however, he would follow in his father's footsteps by entering politics, becoming a member of the US House of Represenatives, under the Democratic Party, in 1937. While still a congressman, Johnson would become a commissioned officer in the Navy Reserves during the 2nd World War. After the conflict, he would be elected by the people of Texas to the US Senate in 1949. He would rise to the position of Senate Majority Whip in 1951; and quickly ascend to become the least senior senator to achieve the Minority Leader and thanks to Democratic victories, the Senate Majority Leader. Senator Johnson is remembered for his determination and dedication in his office. "His loss is a great sorrow to our nation" President Eisenhower told the press, at news of Johnson's passing. He is survived by his wife Claudia, and his two daughters Lynda and Luci.
