Slavs Sack Rome

What if, by some amount of butterflies, instead of the Goths migrating into Roman terretory and sacking Rome, the Slavs migrate west, enter Roman terretory, and sack Rome just as the Goths did in OTL?

I know that it's a strange POD, but it might have some influences on European culture.

I don't think the Slavic ethnogenesis is complete by that time. You'd either hae to wait for them to develop a tribal identity that allows for that kind of leadership, or you have to have a POD in Eastern Europe that drives the process forward.

Slavs wouldn't reach the Balkans or the Alps until the late 500s to the 600s IIRC, so a bit too late for a direct replacement of the Goths in their sack of Rome.

That being said, it doesn't seem entirely inconceivable that a Slavic tribe in the eastern Alps or northwestern Balkans raiding into Italy to devastating effect, perhaps being driven from their settlements themselves by Avar raids.

Are you talking about Slavs completely replacing IOTL Germans starting from Caesar's times or earlier or just stray tribal union going West through Central Europe?

C'mon, we're talking couple of hundred years or less. History sure can be tweaked a little bit to allow for earlier consolidation of the Slavs.

The Lombards sacked Rome, and they were Slavs, right?

The Langobard (Lombards) was one of the most clearly Germanic people*, even the name** show a clear Germanic origin.

*You can discuss if the a lot of other "Germanic" nations in that periode was truely Germanic, but in the Lombard case there's no doubt.

**Langobard means "long beard" and was according to legend a name they got from Wotan (Odin) the supreme Germanic God.

In my Interference TL, in the 7th century a Slavic horde sacks Rome... from the south! before being eventually destroyed and absorbed.
