Slavery remains debatable in the South

In otl it was difficult, and in some cases illegal, even for a white man to say publicly that slavery was morally wrong by the 1850s.

Could it have been possible for the Planter class to be challenged by sections of the white community for whom slavery did not serve their interests and for whom there were doubts on the morality

Any chance of it being as safe to state a belief in human equality in 1859 South Carolina being no more dangerous than say a beliefe that Capitalism is wrong in 2011 New York

You'd need nonpro-slavery of the white community with any real power and influence to exist.

That's...difficult in a situation in which the slave owners are the dominant economic class.
