Slavery in Roman New World?

This is one of those very high level, broad strokes, discussions I like to explore. The main thing I'm interested in is the difference between slavery in the classical world (where slaves were 'merely' the lowest rank in a continuum of social ranks) and the early modern world (where the gulf between slave and citizen was far more pronounced, and the racial component was very prominent).

So, we will assume the following:
  • The Roman Empire, with at least its core territories, survives intact for several more centuries. We will define the core territories as the Mediterranean basin. It may or may not include other European territories, but the absolute maximum European frontier of the Empire should be the Vistula and Dniester. The surviving Empire remains a going concern.
  • Slavery continues to be a common-enough practice in the Empire proper. It need not be the dominant force in the economy like it could often be historically, but not a rarity, either.
  • The Romans develop (or adapt from others) sufficient maritime technologies as to make the discovery and colonization of the New World plausible. Roman New World colonies engage in economic activity recognizable to the historical colonial period: resource extraction of precious minerals and cash crops. Said enterprises are largely dominated by slave labor, which will likely be predominantly African slaves for the same reason as African slaves became the preferred choice historically (they were a valuable export from African populations, were better suited to the climate and diseases of the regions in question, and were less able to run away to native populations).
So, with those assumptions, how might slavery in the Roman New World be different or similar? Would it become racialized as it did historically, or will the long tradition of race-blind slavery in the Roman Old World inhibit that? If slavery is common enough in the Roman Old World, might white slaves be brought over for other tasks or other climates? Would we see any divides between northern plantations where white slaves predominate and southern plantations where black slaves predominate? What about regions where you may have white slaves working as domestic servants and black slaves working in the fields? Or any other possible permutations that I didn't come up with here.

(I suppose technically this question could just be reframed as 'what would New World slavery look like if slavery was common in Europe during the colonial age)
