What would happen with slavery in a TL where the ARW was militarily defeated?
It is commonly agreed that one of the reasons the British Empire abolished the slave trade and then slavery as soon as it did was because it did not posses enough colonies that used slaves. So in such a TL it is easy to imagine the slave trade and slavery lasting longer. Of course the question is how long and what might be the response to such a move from slave colonies.
There is also the immediate issue after a failed ARW of what to do with slaves that ran away. After reading "Liberty's Exiles" I learned that after losing the war the British government gave a half hearted effort at resettling loyalist refugees, even the white ones. The black loyalists got royally shafted, with few actually being compensated for losses in the war.
What do the British do with the run away slaves they promised to free? Do they settle them somewhere in the colonies from which they escaped, perhaps on land confiscated from rebels? I don't think that would work out because during the war the British promised to protect the right of loyal slave owners. So if not in the south then where do they put them? How do they differentiate between slaves that ran away from Loyalist masters (most likely claiming that at the time they fled that their master's were rebels) and those that ran away from actual rebels?
