What would the development of Eastern Europe look like after World War II without communism?
Let's say that Stalin died shortly after the war and that the Soviet Union ended war in a worse economic condition. Beria takes over the USSR. As part of the extensive agreements between the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom, the democratization of Eastern Europe was agreed.
Germany is united in OTL borders as a military permanently neutral and democratic state. Same as Austria.
The establishment of the NATO alliance is a wildcard. I guess the European Defensive Union under French leadership would be attempted.
In Eastern Europe, democratic elections are allowed. As part of the agreement with the West, Beria agrees to the Finnishization of the following countries:
Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria. Let's say that this has been implemented and managed to maintain itself as a stable model, I have certain questions.
Future of Soviet Union with liberalization and the introduction of certain market economic mechanisms?
What would be the internal situation in Italy if it kept the monarchy?
How would a united, neutral Germany look like in the early 50s with OTL borders?
Would Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary retain monarchies or not? Internal development?
Would Czechoslovakia be a single state or not?
How would Poland develop without Soviet influence?
How would Yugoslavia develop without blocks and would Tito manage to retain power to death?
Would France and the United Kingdom create a EU or keep focusing on their colonies?
