Singapore as a Crown Colony?

This is mostly wool gathering, but in the aftermath of WW2 Britain was thinking about keeping Singapore as a crown colony, while the rest of the region entered a Malaysian federation. Naturally, this didn't work out; but is it possible for the city to have remained a British territory ?

If the Chinese community thought that it would guarantee their physical safety and economic prosperity better than outright independence, perhaps? After all, Singapore didn't even want to be independent in the first place, it would happily have remained part of Malaysia had it not been for Malay concerns that keeping the city would tilt the demographic balance towards a Chinese majority.
