I am not refering to the Simon de Montfort who led the rebel barons in the Second Barons' War, but to his father, the leader of the crusader forces during the Albigensian Crusade. In 1212, the same lords who later would force king John to sign the Magna Carta and would start the First Barons' War, plotted to kill, capture or desert king John during his campaign against the Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. According to some sources, they planned to give then the throne to Simon de Montfort. When the king learned of the plot, canceled his planned campaing. The leaders of the conspiracy, Robert FitzWalter and Eustace de Vesci, had to flee. But what if king John had not known about the plot and if he had been killed or camptured, and then the barons had giventhe throne to Simon de Montfort? Would he have acepted it? What consecuences would it have for England and the Albigensian crusade?
