Simon de Montfort, king of England

I am not refering to the Simon de Montfort who led the rebel barons in the Second Barons' War, but to his father, the leader of the crusader forces during the Albigensian Crusade. In 1212, the same lords who later would force king John to sign the Magna Carta and would start the First Barons' War, plotted to kill, capture or desert king John during his campaign against the Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. According to some sources, they planned to give then the throne to Simon de Montfort. When the king learned of the plot, canceled his planned campaing. The leaders of the conspiracy, Robert FitzWalter and Eustace de Vesci, had to flee. But what if king John had not known about the plot and if he had been killed or camptured, and then the barons had giventhe throne to Simon de Montfort? Would he have acepted it? What consecuences would it have for England and the Albigensian crusade?

Of course John wouldn't have accepted it. And most of the rest of Christendom might not accept it either. Prince Louis of France might feel more obliged to claim England by right of his wife now.

If he is killed, this would not be a problem. And they would almost certainly have the support of pope Innocent III, who have just excommunicated king John in 1209, and would not came to an agreement with him until 1213. It was just the discovering of this plot which conviced king John of the need of coming to a deal with the pope. And I think that Philip II of France would be quite happy of having a french baron as king of England, and I do not see how would Louis claim the english throne without the support of the barons. Of course Otto of Brunswick would not be happy.

Simon Montfort needs to marry Eleanor of Brittany(which means he needs to get her in his custody) to get a claim, the other claimant as POD which causes Brittany to accept her as the duchess instead of her younger sister..however that would mean he divorces his first wife..

The barons do not seem to care about dynastic claims. It is probable that de Montfort would be offered the crown of England by a council of barons, according to this. The pope would probably support the granting of the crown.

Plus he has a claim to the Earldom of Leicester which held the office of (High) Steward of England and thus is ruler in absence of the King (and probably why he was considered in the first place).

My question is if Simon de Montfort would accept the crown of England, given that the Albigensian Crusade is not over, and if he leave the Languedoc the gains made by the crusaders would probably be lost to the local lords. ¿What would happen then with the Albigensian Crusade if he accepts and goes to England to join the rebel barons.

Perhaps Simon de Montfort would support Eleanor of Brittany's reinstatement to Brittany and the heiress of the Plantagenet lands...
