Sicily as American Protectorate

So, I know it's borderline ASB, given that Tito was never going to let Italy keep Istria so easily, and given that the Sicilian Indipendence Movement wasn't exactly in the best position for push their positions.

However, I wonder, what would take for create an American protectorate or, stretching it some more, maybe have it join USA proper, possibily by reducing the other territorial losses suffered by Italy?

What would be the impact of what could be the American equivalent of Cuba in the Mediterranean? Would it lead to another Crisis similar to the one of OTL's Cuba? Would it give even more strength to Palmiro Togliatti's PCI, maybe even resulting in Italy joining the Warsaw Pact, if the conditions are right? Or would an independent Sicily be relatively inconsequential on the course of the Cold War?

Interesting I do know Sicily is known to have a movement to become a 51st US state. But yeah I guess it would been possible for US to make Sicily as a protectorate after World War II

Maybe the WA divide Italy like they did Germany, under France, Britain, America, and Yugoslavia, with America getting an occupied zone out of Sicily under the agreement. Sicily could, under America, make a bid for freedom, a and become an America Protectorate until further notice.

In the election post-WWII, Italy goes Communist. The US stays in Sicily, and keeps it 'free' (possibly a hellhole dictatorship like much of Central America was).

The reasons for Sicily making a push for some sort of relation with the US and out of Italy was primarily economic. Sicily wanted Italy out, sure, but they had no economy of their own after WW2 and were entirely dependent on the US bases built there. Its the same reason that Newfoundland made a similar gesture when they were joining Canada.

It was less political than economic. I doubt a dictatorship is going to develop in such a scenario. The most powerful person on the island, besides the traditional crime types, was the senior American Military commander there, and it stayed this way for quite a while.

The Party of Reconstruction in Sicily, which claimed 40,000 members in 1944, campaigned for Sicily to be admitted as a U.S. state.[103] This party was one of several Sicilian separatist movements active after the downfall of Italian Fascism. Sicilians felt neglected or underrepresented by the Italian government after the annexation of 1861 that ended the rule of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies based in Naples. The large population of Sicilians in America and the American-led Allied invasion of Sicily in July–August 1943 may have contributed to the sentiment.

This is basically all I really have about it off the top of my head :p

On a tangential question, does this make the Mafia's operations easier or harder?

Probably much easier in the near term seeing as what caused the second crackdown of the Sicilian Mafia was how far their reach had spread. I doubt the Sicilian mob under the US would be doing anything as brazen as assassinating judges and prosecutors especially if they are smart enough to focus on running the local show with an iron fist and not pissing off the feds.
