Shinkansen build as a maglev

What if the first high speed rail line disided to try a more experimental development. Might convince other countries like France that emulated the shinkansen to try for maglevs as well

It's already being done.

👍 Watch Mustard's vid' on the Shinkansen Maglev

The Shinkansen was deliberately undervalued to convince the govt to build it; bear in mind this is Japan not long after WW2; pretty cash strapped and with no natural resources to aid. The fact it spurred a transport revolution in Japan was not foreseen prior to construction.

Maglev proposals at the time would have been insane prices so wouldn’t be built and pretty pointless; at opening the classic bullet trains only did circa 140mph if memory serves. Fast for time time (and especially compared to the nationwide narrow gauge Japanese railways), but it wasn’t exactly a…well, bullet.

Well yes its starting now, I ment the first Shinkansen line back in the 60's
Side by side today the cost of Japanese HSR is $76m per km and projected costs for Maglev are $178m per km (probably higher). Trying to go Maglev in the 60s would just mean you have wasted billions on a project that you can't afford to finish. As mentioned, the original project was under quoted to get it half done and then the head of JR resigned and there was no point abandoning the project at 50% done.
