She Can Do It: A Timeline

Hillary Clinton Wins Illinois Senate Race
Jake Henley | November 6, 1996

First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton won the 1996 Illinois senate race. The political move, although shocking, was recieved warmly by many. She managed to defeat fellow Democrats Dick Durbin and Pat Quinn in the Democratic primaries, eventually going against Republican Al Salvi. Clinton won the general election with a comfortable percentage of 56.09% and is set to be inaugurated in January, seventeen days before her husband. After this victory, many are already speculating about the future of Clinton's political career, with a small, but vocal minority already forming a Draft Clinton movement for the 2000 Presidential Race. Only time will tell where the future will lead Madam Clinton, however, her future does indeed seem bright.

Senator Clinton commenting on the 2004 Election

Now a two term senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton seemed set to have a successful political career. Now, however, she stood at a crossroads. The Democratic Party, preparing to compete against popular Presdent George W. Bush, was in chaos. They needed a leader, and for many, that leader was Senator Clinton. Although she was the subject of a minor draft movement in 2000 as well as the topic of many conversations about the 2004 election, the Senator had never really thought about the possibility of running for President, at least not this early in her career. Soon, it became obvious that she had two choices: remain in the Senate or announce her candidacy in a race that already seemed crowded. After the declaration that Lincoln Chafee would be mounting a primary challenge against President Bush as the anti-war candidate as well as the announcement that John Kerry would not be running for President and his subsequent endorsement, Clinton knew what she was going to choose. She would run for President of the United States.

Senator Chafee announcing his 2004 campaign

Lincoln Chafee's campaign, largely considered to be quixotic, was one of the reasons that Senator Clinton ultimately announced her candidacy. After a long period of thought and debate on the matter, he himself ultimately decided to run as the anti-war challenger. Because of President Bush's popularity, Chafee wasn't able to get on the ballot in every state, making what seemed to be an impossible race an even steeper uphill climb. During his announcement speech, he criticized Bush's entrance into the Iraq War and further criticized his handling of the conflict saying, "There is no reason we should be in Iraq. Bush has lied to the American people, and if he is reelected, he will continue to lie." Defeat for Chafee seemed imminent, however, he was determined to impact this election.

President George W. Bush: 92%
Senator Lincoln Chafee: 3%
Other/I Don't Know: 5%

Senator Hillary Clinton: 32%
Governor Howard Dean: 31%

Senator John Edwards: 23%
Senator Dick Gephardt: 6%
Representative Dennis Kucinich: 3%
Other/I Don't Know: 5%

So was Bill re elected in TTL and if so, how will Hillary juggle being a Senator and First Lady?

Bill was reelected TTL. The vast majority between 1996-2004 wasn't affected. The fact that she did run while she was First Lady will come up in future updates.

Losing to George Bush wouldn't be humiliating and incompetent enough for Hillary Clinton. She would need to lose to someone like Hulk Hogan.

Nice TL, man! BTW, I hope she runs for President in 2008 and wins-even if she narrowly loses in '04.
