the Whigs could have gone for Scott, but i do not know if that is overtly possible given that i think he was still in mexico at the time.


Not only possible but it might even help.

In those days, many Presidential candidates did not "stump the country" as they do now, so Scott wouldn't necessarily have to come home to campaign. And, given the susceptibility to "foot in mouth disease" which he would display in 1852, this might considerably improve his chances .
