SERIOUS Greens popularity

Aka, real chances of Greens to be a STRONG part of the political scene of occident at least.

With the Noughties(?), there is a rise of anti-globalization forces, critiques of our lifestyle and ideals in general, and a growing power to the Green political ideas due to concern toward the sore state of nature, albeit its minor much in itself in NA, to say the least. But ecology as a science, a philosophy and idea all is getting popular, and some polito Greens at least get elected here and there, like in Europe.

What would be the POD for at least ONE strong Greens ideology/movement in at least one major country, to start easy?

Bonus for distinct ones (like a rightwing one), more for a radicalism who is popular - like a more demanding Eco-socialism or Eco-anarchism. Even more bonus for a global rise, and even an 'Internationale' (in an alegoric sense at least).

Special award if there is antiwank with things as Eco-fascisme...

And where?

Probably Europe or a region like California (I can see a mix of social right and greenism in the southweast...) or maybe even the nations of Australia or NZ...

Feels free to deplace into Future History if impossible and more fitting...

Well, the Greens are currently growing quite strong/popular in Germany - possibly as one result of the discussion regarding Germany switching from nuclear and fossile energy to renewable - though I have to admit I didn't follow it in detail.

But going by that trend, it probably wouldn't be hard to push them even harder - create a PoD in the recent past where it came to a barely-avoided meltdown in a German nuclear reactor, and watch as their popularity skyrockets.

In continental Europe, the Greens actually are quite strong. Due to the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima, the Greens in Germany, generally on the rise for years, got their first governor of a state this year, surpassing the left party.

And in switzerland, there's a economically liberal green party.

To get green parties stronger in short time, all that is needed are more ecological catastrophes. A nuclear powerplant meltdown, some harder facts considering the climate change, something like that.

In general, I think the greens will rise steadily in Europe, becoming the new leftist powerhouse. Traditional socialist ideas of classes supressed and unionism are increasingly unpopular with the educated - to give an example, the voters of the Green party in Germany are the best educated and highest-earning voting group of any party here. The greens supporting a new left rather than old-fasioned socialism have a giant potential - and are increasingly using it.

The Greens are Britain's Sixth largest Party (by Vote, though they are more diffuse than the SNP, Plaid Cymru or the NIrish Parties), and recently won a seat in Westminster.

Have the greens go away from environmentalism and put greater emphasis on the economy and capitalism.

"We are going in a new direction, as of today, the only green that matters is the ones in your wallet."

The Greenlefts (as they literally call themselfs, in Dutch: Groenlinks) are the sixth party in the Netherlands, together with the Democrats '66 (Center-Left Liberals), they both got 10 seats. But I dont like seeing them coming to power. We had the conservative-liberals who wanted to became Greenrights, but thankfully they abolished that plan.

I think Nuclear power in Europe is safe enough, because Japan only happend after a tsunami wich we dont have in Europe. 2/3 of the Germans was thinking that the same as in Japan could happen in Europe, that's just so......stupid actually.

Nuclear energy was disliked in Germany even before Fukushima. The "new" energy policy is actually a return to the politics our goverment abandoned in last fall when it came to power. Fukushima was only the spark which led to the german protests and the following return to the old plans to abandon nuclear energy.

But the current strenght of the German greens (which is one of Germanys major parties since more than thirty years) is not only caused by Fukushima. In many countries we can see a weakening of the traditional parties, because they are seen as ineffective and/or corupt. But while in many of these countries right-wing populists profit from it, this is not acceptable for most germans due to our historical background. Initially Die Linke was the big winner in Germany. But they are badly organized and have some really stupid ideas (an unarmed Bundeswehr for example). The Greens on the other hand are eligible to the middle and upperclass and seen as a party which still has an ideology (which leads sometimes to unrealistic ideas) and nontheless has shown enough pragmatism to be potentially able to govern.

Edit: shouldnt thsis be in the chat

The New Zealand Green Party is a reasonably important part of the current NZ political scene, as they have had elected MPs in the Parliament for about 5 terms. They are also the direct descendent of a predecessor party, the Values Party, which apparently (so they say) was one of the first organised green parties in the West.

Prior to the adoption of proportional representation for the national election, it was almost impossible for the party or its predecessor to get representation. If NZ changed electoral voting methods in the 1970s, then this could have made the Green/Values Party a powerful force

So far as making them a major political party, well that is rather hard. For good or bad reason, the Green Party in NZ have a pretty more image, so far as being a party people trust to be in government and they have not had the success other minor parties have had with forming coalitions, despite being the most stable and long run sucessful of the minor parties.

They have an image of being kooks (i.e. crazy), anti science/progress as well as being irresponsible economically, as they are aligned to quite far to the left there. While they have become more professional, perform well in parliament, have well spoken thoughtful leaders and MPs, that image has proven hard to shake. It isn't helped when they have a lot of anti-vaxxers, homeopaths/natural health types, 9/11 truthers etc, who come up regularly.

On the other hand, as they keep improving their professionalism and try to reach out to a wider membership, they face criticism from the true believers on the Left or environmental side who have long been their core membership and organisers.

I can imagine a somwhat wight wing green party who is very important on SUSTAINABLE economy and all, but I dont think you get what i means.

Something like one key country of the world having a clear Green party governement by example.

And guys, nuclear power isnt the only issues... There is pollution, global climate changes, recycling, etc...
