Sepoy Mutiny if Sikhs are Independent

Sikhs were part of the British forces that put down the Sepoy Mutiny.

How would the Sepoy Mutiny have gone if the Sikh Empire remained independent?

Would the Sikhs have used the opportunity to expand into British India?

I think the Sikh would try to remain neutral. A lot really depends on how they deal woth their Hindu auxiliaries.

How come none of the loyal Sepoys got Victoria Crosses? Many of them did valiant acts for their employer and the fact that its their job to do so doesn't take away from the acomplishment. I know it's available for those who call the British Crown their Queen/King not just British, look up the list of people who got them.

Victoria Crosses weren't awarded to colonial troops until 1867.
