Senator George W Bush

Take a Gore wins in 2000 PoD -- say the FL SC ruling stands -- where Bush decides to run for the US Senate in 2002.

How do you see Bush's career panning out? Could his views evolve differently? Is Rick Perry still most likely to win the governorship?

Bush would most likely have an unremarkable career in the senate. He would vote the party line on every issue and be just another conservative republican. The real interesting question would be if and when a Tea Party type movement arose, would they try to primary him?

Perry will still be governor and he'll probably get reelected in 2002. He might lose reelection in 2006 if the opposition unites around a single candidate. IOTL, he got reelected with 39% of the vote in a very messy four-way race.

I just can't see Bush as a senator at all. Not his type of game. Either he stays on as Governor (which I think he might concievably do, if only for another term) or he retires in 2003.

Yeah he's not going to the Senate. Working there, it's become pretty obvious that most senators are really studious and hard working folks. Even the "folksy populists" are more Atticus Finch types than Jimmy Carter's or George Bush's, as in they are very understanding of procedure and deeply knowledgeable about issues.

I could see Bush in the House though. It's a much more emotional and impulsive body. In this scenario he probably remains Governor until his term expires and then retires. Maybe he gets involved in baseball again?

Yup. I don't think he would stay on as Governor though. I'd say about 60/40 he leaves.

I'd think that he would retire from politics in 2003 and go into the private sector in some form or another. Maybe he'd go back to the Rangers. Not a chance he could become commissioner though, Selig has been the choice since '98 and that wouldn't change.
