Seeing through the Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes, brigadier general in the Volunteer Army during the Civil War, was wounded in action five times, once nearly fatally. Suppose he'd been killed? Would anything have been different?

First of all, this belongs in pre-1900.

Secondly: Reconstruction still ends unless some Republican wants to use the US Army to keep the carpetbaggers in place, another election becomes the first one with charges of electoral fraud post-12th Amendment.

Big question is whether the Republcans can find anyone else who can carry Ohio.

Even Hayes, a popular native son, did so only by a single percentage point. If his replacement loses it, Tilden is in regardless of what happens down south.
