So what would happen if the bullet missed General Sedgwick's ironic laughable yet sad death?

he then says 'see, what did i tell you?' and gets hit by the NEXT bullet.

well, it seems fitting, anyway.

Funny. Very funny.

The Overland Campaign was quite strictly overseen and directed by Grant. No major opportunities for corps commanders to either shine or commit huge blunders. Perhaps Sedgewick could take more initiative on May 14th, concentrate his men earlier, and flank Lee on the right - then again, Lee already had a division heading in that direction.

Unfortunately, I think it will be very similar to OTL, unless you can get Grant to change his plans significantly, given that he now has 2 very good corps commanders still alive.

His survival is unlikely to affect the Civil War much. OTOH, he was popular enough he might have been considered for political office afterwards. Or he could have served in the later Indian wars.

Best possible result: improved Union performance in the Overland Campaign, but probably not enough improved to significantly hasten the end of the war.

Worst possible result: no measurable difference, Sedgwick retires and probably dies within ten years at home in Connecticut. He was not inclined toward politics, and had already stopped enough bullets to short out a metal detector.

Oddly enough, I was thinking about this very PoD yesterday. I don't really have a clue what would come of it, though.
