Hi, this is my first ever alternatehistory.com timeline, I hope you like it. The idea behind this was to create as many new states in the former Soviet Union as possible, semi-realistically, without changing the general course of history very much. There are various points of divergence, the first of which begin around 1943, when Western diplomats at Yalta falter, allowing the Soviets to annex all of Poland east of the Molotov Line. From there, things stray from reality numerous times, but always manage to stick to the general course of history. No butterflies. In the end, at least a dozen new states arise in the post-soviet world. To start, here's the first map in the series, the USSR in 1990, a year before its downfall. Over the next few days to weeks I'll upload more maps that I've made and hope to make for this project. Enjoy!

The Carpathian Republic

Since their original 1920s attempt to create a state in Western Ukraine, Carpathian Ruthenia was tossed between various powers: first Czechoslovakia, then Hungary, and finally the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. However, after a disastrous insurgency by partisan groups in the region, Nikita Khrushchev made the decision to separate the region from Ukraine as it's own SSR to relieve pressure in 1957, creating the Carpathian SSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Carpathia became an independent republic between Ukraine and Slovakia. It was reorganized into five ethnic raions and a capital municipality, and began to align itself with the West, rapidly modernizing and joining the European Union in 2006, NATO in 2008, and the Eurozone in 2011. Today, the multiethnic republic has strong relations with it's neighbors in the EU, and is considered a brother nation to Ukraine (and Crimea). It is sometimes known as the opposite counterpart of Moldova, another piece of a nation separated by the Soviets with a significant gap in wealth from its former home.

The Republic of Kalmykia

Created in 1987 as part of Gorbachev's restructuring of the Caucasus towards his vision of liberalization, the Kalmyk SSR would become independent barely four years later with the fall of the Soviet Union. A founding member of the Commonwealth of Independent States and a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Republic of Kalmykia has remained a close ally of Russia since its inception, although whether this is due to genuine good will or simply as a means of survival while entirely surrounded by Putin's armies is debatable. Under the rule of President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Kalmykia and Russia have grown together even further, signing agreements that would allow ethnic Kalmyks in Russia to travel freely across the border and vice versa, and sending a small detachment of volunteers to fight in the bloody Chechen Wars. Today, although firmly in the Russian sphere, Kalmykia retains a unique identity as the only Buddhist-majority nation in Europe.

Xinjiang and Mongolia aren't hard pods, easiest earlier than your 1943 one. Especially if you have the Chinese SFR.

If not xinjiang you could get a breakaway state.

Afghanistan can be invaded during the partition of Iran and Soviets could hold their ground on the ssrs there
