Second Siege of Charleston

After the surrender at Yorktown, George Washington suggested that he and the Comte De Grasse cooperate again in attacking the British garrison at Charleston, unfortunately for De Grasse he refused and instead found himself captured after the Battle of the Saints. WI instead Charleston had fallen and the British had been deprived of an enormous victory that allowed Britain to gain a strong position at the negotiating table.

It would put the British in a tight bind at the negotiating table. Could the French have consequently pressed for a return of Quebec, or possibly concessions in India to turn the clock back to the 1750s? Could the Spanish perhaps have had a better shot at getting Gibralter back?

The French weren't really interested in regaining Canada. In OTL they were more than happy to let Britain keep Canada as way of keeping the US close to France.

What I'm thinking is France had captured quite a number of Britain's West Indian possessions, but after the battle of the saints was left to weak to maintain possession. If France could keep possession Britain may be forced to hand back Gibraltar to Spain or give up some major assets in the west indies.

Another area of concern is how this would effect the US. In OTL Britain resisted recognizing American independence as a pre-condition for talks now that position maybe changed. Their was even talk of the US gaining Canada but the details of an exchange for Canada have so far eluded me.

The British are NOT going to give up something as valuable as Gilbraltar for a few islands in the Caribbean. If Florida was a good enough trade to get Spain out of the Bahamas, then the Brtish can get France out of St. Kitts or Antigua with a few trading posts in India or Guinea.

Well there was an abortive attempt to trade Gibraltar for Puerto Rico, though that was nixed because Puerto Rico would then compete with Jamaica.

I've heard it was mostly Franklin urging England to give it up anyway. ;)

Incidentally, though, I heard the Niagaran Peninsula almost went to America anyways in particular. Anyone have word on that?

Probably right about Franklin, we Americans can be so optimistic;) I have to say I hadn't heard about the possibility of the US gaining the Niagara Peninsula though.
