Sealion scorched earth?

I read somewhere that Chuchill asked for mustard gas as well.

He didn't have to ask for it. We still had quite a bit, left over from the First War.

Churchill, iirc, specifically authorised its use if it appeared to only way to prevent the Germans from establishing a beachhead. He also cautioned against taking prisoners, saying that if a German appeared to be surrendering, it might well be a ruse, so if in doubt, forget Queensberry rules and just shoot him.

As far as Winston was concerned it was a case of "Anything goes". A Nazi conquest of this country was the ultimate horror, and any measure was justified in order to prevent it. Gentlemanly conduct would just have to go out of the window.

I agree with him.

Don't pay any attention to the stereotype of the British ridgedly sticking to the rules. When the occasion calls for it a true English Gentelman will slide a knife between your ribs, and he'll do it with such charm and finess that you'll thank him for the privelage. You don't build an empire so large that the sun litteraly never sets on it without knowing when and how to fight dirty.

How did Sir Cathcart d'Eath put it in Porterhouse Blue?

"Different in the old days. [We British] looked damn fools - were clever. Confuses the foreigner, you see - puts him off his guard; can't take you seriously. Then, just when he thinks he's got you where he wants you - you give it to him in the goolies!"
