Sealion! ...kinda.

A lot, nah, everyone on this board thinks a Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom is utter blasphemy, which, I can mostly agree with. Hitler simply didn't have the means. However, I had an idea today.

This is world where Germany kicked ass in WW1, by defeating France, Britain, and Russia, (the United States stayed neutral) by 1917 or thereabouts. Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire all survived, and consolidated their rule through whatever means. Austria federalizes, the Ottomans find the Iraqi oil, whatever they need. Western Europe and Russia, however, crumble and nationalistic fascist movements spring up. World War II happens after the death of Wilhelm II in 1941. France invades Germany, Russia attacks the new Baltic nations, etc.

Fast forward a few years. France has crumbled under the Second Reich, Russia is battered, and only Britain remains. Would a surviving and superpowerful Imperial Germany have the means to invade Britain in '40s? What would a land war look like between Germany and Britain on British soil?

Well, for your background story, I think that instead of a surviving A-H empire, having a bunch of "friendly" (i.e. coerced) German satellites in Europe might work a bit better.

If the Kaiser keeps the HSF nice and strong, and if Britain suffers from economic disruptions, communist/fascist revolts in Britain itself, and mayhem in the empire, then I could see it happening. Mind you, the Germans will still need all that special stuff (transports et al) for the invasion, and the Brits will know what's coming. Expect a long, very bloody landing. If they do get asore, whatever happens will be quite difficult to predict. Personally, I think it would just be easier to promote the collapse of the empire, then "Finlandize" Britain over the years.

Then, of course, the stage is set for the final war against America.

It'd be messy, but yes, this is probably the only circumstance in which I could see it happening.

Unless the US intervenes.

Number of destroyers may be the most critical item. Both sides would be cautious about how they used capital ships. The reall battles may well be destroyer flotillas with a few light cruisers. If the Germans have at least 60% of the DD's in their navy (assuming at least equal equal quality) and air superiority over the Channel and southern England, they could get a beachhead established but at a heavy cost.

An alternative strategy might be what I call SeaLion Lite--just trying to capture the Isle of Wight and let British air and naval forces bleed themselves white trying to retake it.
