So around the time of classical antiquity mentioned by Herodotus and others a fierce Iranian people known as the scythians roamed the steppes of what would become Eastern Europe, Russia and north Central Asia.

They were not United but what if they were? What if you had an equivalent of the Huns or at least the Magyars come down from the steppes say anywhere from 300 BC to 100 AD?

How long could they have lasted how would they have affected the Roman Empire? And so forth and so on?

Not my area of expertise, just wanted to say they weren't Turks they were Iranian.

Honestly, depending on when they United, it would be just as relevant to ask about their impact on Iran. From what I remember, the Scythians in OTL raided pretty consistently into Iran. If they unite and are looking for conquest, it strikes me as likely that they would head out that direction, rather than towards Rome.

I guess maybe around the 4th century BC they unite by a Genghis equivalent or some such and move across the caspian basin and reach Roman borders around 250 BC in the mid republic or perhaps a little later.

How does that sound?

If they united the possible targets are thracia, macedonia and Greece the damage will far superior to that caused by celts in the same time period, i predict a severe impoverishment of the region with several cities and settlements plundered successively as a consequence you can see a large scale migration to anatolia.

Shameless self plug, but my TL Ai Orsa is exactly about that. The Scythians, or the Saka as they are known to eastern culture, invade the Indian sub-continent en masse and leave a lasting cultural impact. Various other butterflies include the rise of feudalism and knighthood first in the Punjab, followed by the rest of the Indo-Gangetic plains and final past the Deccan, as well as a surviving Greco-Bactrian kingdom.

If you want to attack the Roman Empire, then you need to think about the Sarmatians. Scythians at that time were either too ellinizorovanny (late-Scythian kingdom with its capital in Scythian Neapolis (Tauris)), or were too far (the Indo-Scythian (Saka more) kingdom, too, "softened").
