SCOTUS sits in panels

What would happen if instead of the current and historical practice of having the entire Court sit, the decided that appeals would be heard by a bench of three or five Justices. Historically, in the early 20th Century the SCOTUS adopted several English practices from the House of Lords, discretionary review for example. What if they also adopted this.

Would Judicial appointments be less political?

No, as long as Congress appoints Judges the US system and the power of the Supreme Court means it's never going to be apolitical. Not that the UK Judiciary is apolitical, they just do a better job of pretending.

Yes, but with Panels, there is less of an incentive to look into someones past indept with a view to the number of votes on the Court. Afterall with several hundred possible permutations, it does not really factor in as much.
