Schwarzenegger v Clinton 2008

When Arnold became governor of California in 2003 there was some talk about changing the US Constitution to allow foreign-born to run for office, believing Arnold was their next big chance. Some Democrats, probably tongue in cheek, spoke of "sure, if we put in their repealing term limits so Bill Clinton can run again". So, with some handwavium lets say this amendment passes enough states to go into effect in time for both to run in the primaries for the 2008 election, and that they both do (more handwavium that Hillary feels better to let Bill run). Does Bill beat Obama in primaries? Does Arnold have a chance to win Republican at that point in his career? And if by whatever 1% chance of occurring it does come about of Arnold vs Bill, who wins?

I don't think Bill would win the Democratic primaries as it would be shitting on the two-term tradition with no war or anything like that which forces him to run.

Bill Clinton does better in the South, while Arnold Schwarzenegger does well in the West. Ultimately, due to the Recession and the lingering consequences of the Iraq War, Clinton edges out Schwarzenegger in the popular vote and key swing states like Florida, New Hampshire, and Ohio.

Pretty good, though if he wins California I'd suspect Arnold would win New Mexico too.

Would Schwarzenegger win California, or was he still popular in that state in 2008?

He had net positive approval ratings.

Maybe, I wasn't sure, I honestly think this election would look like OTL 2008 but with slightly better results for the Republicans and in California (but not swinging it).

"Schwarzenegger won the governorship, therefore he would carry California for president" is a complete and utter fallacy. Party is much less important for governor than for president. Many blue states have elected Republican governors whom they would never vote for in a presidential race. How well did Mitt Romney do in MA when he ran for president? Does anyone think that Illinoisans would vote for Bruce Rauner for president?

California is a blue state in presidential elections--especially in as Democratic a year as 2008!--regardless of who the GOP nominates. Oh, and by the way, by September 2008, "Schwarzenegger's approval rating has dropped to 40 percent, down from 60 percent last December." http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-09-12-1301784480_x.htm
