The Kingdom of Izmir (Turkish: İzmir krallığı) (Greek: Βασίλειο της Σμύρνης), often called just Izmir (Turkish: İzmir) (Greek: Σμύρνη) is a country located in Anatolia, in the southwestern section of the peninsula. It shares borders with Turkey to the north and east, and the Aegean Sea to the west and south. The country also shares a maritime border with Greece. The largest city is İzmir, which serves the nation's capital. Around 75% of the population identifies as ethnically Turkish and another 20% identifies as ethnically Greek.
Izmir has been controlled by many different entities and people groups throughout its history, such as the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks, Mongols and Ottomans. the modern state of Izmir arose in the aftermath of the Anatolian War. Following the decisive Republican victory at the battle of Ankara in May 1922, the retreating Ottoman forces were cornered in the southwestern corner of the peninsula, however, the remaining Ottoman forces were able to fend off several Republican attacks until the Armistice of Istanbul was signed in November 1922, followed by a peace treaty in March 1923.
Following the peace treaty, the Ottomans enacted the Rönesans reforms from 1923 to 1929, which effectively abolished the Ottoman caliphate and transformed the Ottoman state into a parliamentary monarchy, using Britain as a guide. The Ottomans also issued official apologies for their previous genocides during this period, which earned them praise form the global community. The country participated in World War II on behalf of the Allies and was instrumental in liberating Greece from Axis occupation. The country was also a founding member of NATO.
In 1964, the last Ottoman king, Mehmed VII, died without an heir and after a brief constitutional crisis, the Tozlu dynasty came into power. The country was renamed Izmir and joined the UN and the EU the next year.
