Saxony unites Germany

Despite hearing about a plethora of threads asking this same question I have yet to find a single one.

So how could Saxony unite Germany and what would the consequences.

I'm not that knowledgeable, but I think your best bet is earlier. Have Saxony not fragment nearly as much, and somehow have it survive until Nationalism emerges, assuming it does.

involves a heavy Saxon involvement. I don't remember off the top of my head whether the 'German' state ends up being formed around them, but that seemed to be where it was going.....

Bavaria always seemed like the most-likely to unite the German states, if Prussia never did.

My personal opinion, still unbiased by the above timeline:

I think for such an action after 1850, Saxony is simply too weak.
The authoritatitve unification, as Prussia performed it, involved heavy military
actions and threats. Saxony would not have managed to.
I suppose you wanted to model acc to Prussia's example.

If, however, you are requiring a different style of unification,
based on the desire of the people, say, then you will not get
a leading role of just one state (which is not the strongest one.)
Saxony might of course claim leadership in concepts, as a
spokesperson for the crowd, but not much more.
Nevertheless, the implications might be worth analyzing.

On the other hand, if you go far back, it is easy to find a more
central role for Saxony in Germany (actually I am also doing so
in my own timeline). But I had the impression that you are asking
for a PoD after the Congress of Vienna?

It all depends upon your possible PoD dates.

While, I'm not too hot on Germany, I'd always been lead to believe that Saxony was hamstrung from the end of the Napoleonic wars onwards.

Maybe have a defter footed foreign policy, with a turn against Napoleon in 1813 or so? If they can convince the powers that divide the spoils after the war that Saxony is on their side, this might see an expansion. It could also limit Prussian gains to some extent.

Then again, I may be talking through my hat...
