Saxons...

so just how successful could mainland europe's saxons have been in empire building. and just big of an empire could they have built/controlled?:D

Why, funny you should mention that...

I hate to advertise my timeline on another thread, but this seems too on target to pass up.

I'm unsure of what era of Saxony you're specifically interested in, but my sixteenth century Saxons are bent on unifying Germany, destroying the Habsburgs, and settling South Carolina.

My point of departure is that a sister of Henry VIII's who dies in infancy grows up and is married off to be the second wife of the Elector John the Steadfast. She produces the heir. And after that, the Ernestine Wettins are a bit, well, turbo-charged.

Currently in the storyline we are careening toward England's Armada Year and the tensions that in our timeline produce the Thirty Years War are mounting.

From the Rhine to Lake Peipus not good enough for you?

On a more serious note, that depends on what you mean by 'Empire'. The Saxon tribal constitution is unsuited to traditional empire-building, though it can support a settler conquerst dynamic reasonably well (and seems to have done so - the Saxons are the only Germanic Grossstamm known to have become that without a royal leadership). The post-Christianisation Saxons were pretty dangerous and quite nasty to their neighbours. THe question here is where you draw the line - where do they stop being Saxons and start being Germans? Does the Hansa still count? The Teutonic Order?

Eh, if no unification with the other tribal duchies happens it will be Saxon, not German, no matter the extent. And if thats not enough, closer contacts to the Anglosaxons could also help in that department...

i just got a cool idea that instead of "Germany" on a map, we could have a "Saxony" :D could u imagine the butterflys

It's possible, but the POD would have to be either very early (late Carolingian or very early Ottonian) or a post-1648 non-unification setting that has Saxony instead of Prussia rising. In either case, the map would most likely have it oriented along an East-West axis, with Bavaria, Franconia and Swabia independent. Saxony from the Frisian coast to ultimately as far as your TL wants it to go. If you're feeling wank-y, Novgorod. Dominant power in the Baltic and possibly the North Sea, hegemon of Scandinavia and vassaliser of Slavic states to its east and south. Speaking Plattdeutsch. :D

is saxony became an empire early on what do u guys think about colonization?

Unlikely, Saxony would focus on East Europe, and would likely place puppet states outside the area, they could conquer and hold.

In best we would see a Saxony holding North Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, Norvograd and the Nordic States.

Colonies they would likely follow the Danish colonial system, a few Sugar Isles, a few Afrecan Slaveports and a few Far Easten stronghold. While the Settlers go east.
