Save the long s

It's mandated by the writing implement. In contrast to a modern pen or ballpen a quill pan can only be... ummm... pulled, not pushed. I hope that makes sense in English. I'm at work atm, when I get home I'll illustrate that with a drawing.
Quite, a quill pen is VERY different from a modern ballpoint - or even a modern fountain pen.

The upper one ought to be what Dathi mentioned. I've seen it also in 16th century type.

The lower row illustrates how a round s is written. It's just a quick scribbling.
