The battle of the Persian gates was in a mountain pass,so they could not surround his army. The battle started on dawn with Shahbaraz charging with his infrantry ,but he didn't know that it was a ruse to trap his army in the pass. When he realized the trap he was too late to get out of the past. Horse archers fired their flaming arrows at the infantry backs. Zohar's Cataphracts charged at the panicked infantry routing them. Shahbaraz was shocked now he only had his cataphracts ,and light infrantry. but he still had more men than Zohar he wanted to put his army in a open field so he could surrond them and finish them.

Zohar knew this and he ordered a stealth march to follow the enemy until they stopped when the army camped for the night 50 miles pass the Zagros he ordered a full attack on Shahbaraz's camp. Most of the men were in sleep or changing guard shifts ,so most of the army was putting on armour ,or mounting horse when they got slain. Fortualty for shahbaraz he fled with his general staff to a small town in the west called Herat in the Western part of Mesopotamia.

He could set up a battle in his favor using his superior numbers to maybe win the battle. The troops that he drafted into battle were peasants armed with farming tols, and not full of food and water, while zohar force was high in morale and had food to eat. He sent his force to fight Shabaraz ragged army ,and most of them surrendered to Zohar. When he found Shahbaraz disheveled self. He ordered him to be executed by pouring molten gold mixed with silver down his throat.

After the Civil war Zohar crowned himself as Darius II,born into a major noble family from central Iran decided to make his capital 50 miles north of Persepolis. He would make Ctesiphon a temporary capital until the new city was built. He would reform the government to make it a more meritocratic system. He would introduce reforms in the army that made it more smaller but more elite reducing it to 170,000 men with a balance of horse archers ,and cataphracts. He would also build a navy similar to the Byzantines.

During his reign many trading contacts with china ,and the rest of the world more the Sassanids coffers full with gold. He had also started to make a new dawn in the relations with the Byzantines. He ushered an era of peace that would last a long time The time of his reign also brought many Greek and Latin texts in to Persian. Many inventions were made in his reign like woodblock printing brought from china, and Persian fire. [1] This era of knowledge, and learning was called the third golden age.
