The war was not going well the Byzantines were retreating on all fronts ,there was talk about retreat to Carthage. While in Constantinople Heraclius was in shock, and the situation looked grim the Sassanid army was right outside the gates, he pondered the idea of fighting them off, but they had all of the Levant, Anatolia and Egypt plus the grand patriarch died six months ago. The decision to move to Carthage was set. A message was sent to the Persian general Shahrbaraz, and the Avar chieftain, and. The peace treaty of the war had two main points the byzantines were forced to cede all of asian territory ,to pay indemnities, and so began the rise of Persia. This is a preview y'all will post more later.

After the victory of Constantinople khorsau was pleased the Greeks had been taught a lesson . He could finally say that he could be compared to the old kings of Persia liked Cyrus the great then a thought came to him he would do the one thing that the old kings could not do he would conquer Greece and become the greatest king ever. That dream would have to wait until Persia recovered from the war, and was interrupted by the arab invasion from the south. The Persian recovery from the war was magnificent art and architecture flowed in the Persian court like a raging river from new artists things were also very good for the military new inventions were beginning to make infantry more powerful in the battles ahead. There were armed with more armor like the Calvary but still lighter than most infantry. There were also armed with more powerful crossbows and arrows with poison tips. The inventions copied from the byzantines were mainly in architecture and defense wall building like the grand aqueducts of Ctephstion and the grand city walls modeled after Constantinople. His armies were now mainly made up of heavy infantry numbered 250,000 men. This force was the 2nd best core of the Sassanid army next to the immortals. There were war elephants that numbered 1,000 animals. On the religious front orthodox Christians were being persecuted because they were thought to be byzantine spies ,most fled to carthage others went deep inside the mountains like christens of old . In other places like Europe the avars were the hegemon of the Balkans.
Next invaders from the south

My gut says that you're pushing it with the elephants. Elephants were an element that were hard to control and even harder to supply in the arid Persian landscape. Plus the heavy lancers that the Persians are famous for are far better then elephants for a heavy charge. It seems that you want the Sassanids to become the Achaemenids with the way you are fitting out their army, cool idea but I'm not sure how doable it will be for Khusrau. The Byzantines used a combined arms approach, but the Sassanids were, like the Parthians, almost totally cavalry, and switching between the two when you don't have a tradition of Infantry and when TRADITION mitigates against it, is kinda hard. Otherwise I think that this looks pretty interesting.

I don't think the Sassanids would be that cruel against the Christians at least not the non-Orthodox Christians based around Syria and Egypt. I'm sure they would be left alone.

The Sassanids could probably Co-Op the Nestorians and other East Churches that were persecuted by the Byzantines.

The Sassanids were very tolerant, acctually. Syrians, Egyptians and Armenians whose interpretation of Christianity differed from Constantnople's would probably have more religous freedom under Sassanid rule.

Of course, the Sassanids would be weary after this campaign, an easy target for the Arabs.

Indeed, the Persians were fairly tolerant towards other religions and I second the idea that other interpretations of Christianity amongst the Arabs and Armenians would probably have more freedom under Sassanid rule.
And there is also the shadow of Arab conquest always looming, with the Persians weak and ripe for the picking. I look forward to more of your story.

a preview

In Persia however, The Sassanid were still recovering and were not ready for war, and that is when the Muslims came and invaded Persia. They got in Mesopotamia and Syria but not Anatolia. The Caliphate were set on conquering the whole empire until one battle changed it all The battle of the Tigris River It was an cloudy day, filled a dry heat like a the deserts of Mesopotamia in June 638, Leading the army was the general Zohar [1] with 35,000 men composing of 10,000 infantry , 5,000 cataphracts , 20,000 horse archers. Opposing him was The sword of God Khaild Ibn al-waild with 25,000 infantry and Calvary. They met on the banks of the Tigris.

Hopefully the Persians can defeat the Arab invaders.

The battle was the most epic battles since the conquests of Alexander the great himself. The Arab Cavalry was galloping across the Tigris, while the Cataphracts met the lightly armored Arabs on the other side of the river. The cataphracts crushed the Calvary like flies. The Persian infantry and light Calvary Charged at the weak center due to the Calvary fight on the flanks and the infantry broke though the center ,and the Sword of God was broken.

The Arab invaders fell back to the Euphrates with their General dead and tried to make a last stand. They tried to fight on but,due to the Persian increse in Morale, and Cockiness. They turned what was supposed to be a quick and decisive victory into a bloody stalemate. This conflict would be a stalemate for two years, and until finally the persian Empire used the full force of the military against the Rashidun Caliphate in the second battle of the Euphrates using war elephants. The ragtag force of 10,000 men tried to stop the mass numbers of Cataphracts, and heavy infantry numbering 50,000 men ,plus with sixty war elephants. Some of the men tried to swim to get away but most were not swimmers and they drowned in the river. The men who stayed on the Persian got killed like a doe being hunted. It was said that the Euphrates flowed with blood after wards. When the Caliph heard about the battle he surrendered to Persia.

In Persia the non Orthodox sects of Christianity were flourishing. While the Orthodox sect was being persecuted and fled to Carthage. In the Byzantine remnant was weaken and lost the Italian lands. In china on the other hand was flourishing under the Tang and began to trade with the Persians.

Hopefully not too asb

After the Arab retreat in 637 Khorsau was pleased , he had done the impossible he had restored the old Persian Empire , and then he defeated the Arabs in the Euphrates and parts of Arabian desert. He had reduced the Arabs to Arabia, that was where they belonged. He still could not get the idea of taking Greece out of his head. The northern part of Greece was part of the Avar Kingdom, while Southern Greece were Still part of the Byzantine Empire. He knew a logical man could see that Iran could collapse if he screwed up. He did not like thinking of negative things, so he went into his harem. He had kept his harem well stocked, and let the girls take his mind off things.

Update time

In 638 Khorsau was getting old,and he held a huge festival to celebrate his long reign, there were three days of drinking, eating ,and having entertainment. His health was declining before and after the party his health was ruined. He died three weeks later, his son succeeding him as Artaxerxes III[1].

Artaxerxes III reign was a very short one for the court ,and various satraps were extremely corrupt and greedy. Artaxerxes deposed the corrupt satraps, but there was much resistance to his reforms by the nobles. Several of the Sassanid nobles of the courts launched a plot to assassinate the Shahanshah. The plot went down on Wednesday on a cool August night , Artaxerxes was walking with Zohar which was his favorite general, when three men came up to them with daggers. Zohar fended off two of the assailants, but the third man stabbed the king in the chest. Artaxerxes last words were "Zohar , carry on my duties." After he said that Zohar stabbed the third man in the back.

Zohar was enraged by the murdur and crowned himself as shah and they began to purge the nobility, and Satraps until they were gone ,but they a couple nobles began to organize an army in the west, and so began the Persian civil war.

The Persian Civil war between the Zoharist faction led by Zohar ,and forces loyal with the dead king. The other faction vying for control was Shahbaraz and his faction. The forces making up Zohar's Army was basically made of forces loyal to him. However those forces were very small numbering 25,000 men. Shahbaraz forces numbered three times that. Zohar was a native of the Zagros,he knew if he could trap him in one of the passes in the mountains his forces would be trapped so he divided his forces as the holding force numbering 10,000 men. Zohar would lead a cavalry force numbering 10,000 men. His brother Darius would lead a decoy force of horse archers hopfully getting him in the pass and trapping him ,and locking him in place and trapping his force ,then his cataphracts would finish him off while Shahbaraz was retreating. At least that was the plan, he would have prayed to Ahura Madza ,but he was too stressed out to pray.
