Santa Anna stays at home

WI during the the Texan revolution Santa Anna stayed in Mexico City and did not lead the army in battle? I am going to guess this would would result in Mexico beating Texas but would impact would this have? Would their still be a war the USA?

Mexico defeats Texas reasonably decisively. With a military triumph under his belt, the victorious general immediately seeks to depose Santa Ana using the assembled mexican army. The result is a moderate civil war and the probable exile of one of the two caudillos. In the meantime, the Texans nurse their wounds and continue to ignore Mexico city, while looking to Washington for future assistance.

@Zeppelin: Maybe the new general doesn't want to lose so many men attacking The Alamo and the war ends early! :)

A US-Mexico collision is still inevitable, and Texas is still going to be the flashpoint. I've always thought that in these circumstances the US is going to fight a more cautious and limited war against Mexico, with a less decisive outcome. Probably more than one war, in fact. How this affects the French incursion, I don't know.

the Mexicans didn't lose that many men at the Alamo, no more than 600 is the best guess. Santa Anna actually did fairly well in Texas... right up until San Jacinto. Another general likely wouldn't have split up his force so much, and would have sentries out. Of course, Santa Anna not being in TX means that he can't be captured and forced to sign a treaty freeing TX....
