The Artuqid dynasty (Seljuk Turkish: دولت أرتوقىد) was a medieval Turko-Islamic state of the Dogar tribe that controlled much of the Levant, Upper Mesopotamia, and the Hejaz between the 12th and 16th centuries. The lineage was founded in 1086 in Jersualem by Artuk Bey. His sons established the state in Upper Mesopotamia in 1102. In 1222, the dynasty conquered Damascus, Mecca, and Medina. In 1237, Sultan Sokmen IV conquered Jerusalem from the Crusaders, declaring an empire. While ruled mostly by a decentralized Turkic gentry, Greek as well as Arab influences deeply permeated the culture of the empire.

Around 1320, the empire began to go into decline. Conflict with the Lusignan dynasty, the Sefawids, and the Venetians allow for the already decentralized ruling class to split further apart. Sultan Mahmud I began awarding coastal lands to prominent and trustworthy Levantine families, regardless of faith or origin, in an effort to ensure loyalty in commerce. When the Seljuks of Persia fell in 1360, the Artuqid court experienced a massive influx of nobles and administrators, disturbing the authority of the Sultan and the existing gentry. With the death of Sultan Salih in 1364, several states began to break away. The nephew of Sultan Salih was placed on the throne by Seljuk immigrants as David II. At his death in 1376, the Artuqids lost most of their territory and became confined to Upper Mesopotamia, with the head of the clan taking the title Emir instead of Sultan. A turbulent existence continued until 1517, when the Abbasids and Persians dismantled the dynasty.
Several advances in civil engineering, architecture, engraving, and academia were made during the Artuqid reign. Caravanserais, mosques, bridges, and hospitals built by the Artuqids were used for centuries after their demise.
