Sam Nunn 1988

Before the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) got Clinton nominated in 1992 they were viewing Sam Nunn as a potential nominee in 1988. So what if Nunn entered the primary and won the nomination? Nunn was already garnering praise for his role in leading the Democratic party's early response to Iran Contra, so say he uses that with his strong defense credentials to build a campaign off of.

I can see him narrowly beating Bush so long as Atwater doesn't have dirt on him.
I definitely see Nunn being a stronger candidate than Dukakis, especially against Atwater attacks. I wonder who Nunn would pick as VP, I'm assuming a Northeastern Liberal but who?

Mario Cuomo would be a decent VP pick to balance the ticket as a popular governor and a strong liberal, or Dukakis himself could also be used to balance he ticket and foster some party unity. Bob Casey could be a pick if Nunn wants to appeal to Pro-Lifers to steal votes from Clinton, but I somewhat doubt he would pick a controversial choice like Casey (who most of the party opposed)

If both Gore and Nunn are in the race, they probably split the Southern vote and Dukakis' path to the nomination is that much easier.
